All sorts of things can keep your hair from shining like using heated tools, exposure to air pollution, and product buildup. If your hair has been lacking in the shine department lately, no matter what the cause, consider incorporating the following three ideas into your hair routine so you can bring some shine back to your tresses.
End your showers with a cold-water rinse.
Hot water opens up the hair cuticle, causing the hair shaft to become rough and less able to reflect tight. Less reflected light means less shine. By ending your shower with a cold-water rinse, the cuticles of your hair will lay flat, leaving your tresses with a more sleek and shiny appearance. To make this step as pleasant as possible, tip your head forward and lean into the water so that only your hair gets the cold-water treatment.
Apply a lightweight hair oil after washing your hair.
You can easily add more shine to your tresses by applying a lightweight hair oil like argan oil or jojoba oil after washing your hair. Not only will using such oils add a brilliant shine to your hair, but they can also infuse your hair with loads of frizz-taming moisture. Just be careful that you don’t over-oil your hair, however, else your hair may end up looking more greasy than shiny.
Distribute your hair’s natural oils between washes with a boar bristle brush.
Another way to help bring more shine to your tresses is to brush your hair between washes with a boar bristle brush. Brushing with a boar bristle brush helps distribute your hair’s natural oils down the length of the hair shaft, so your hair can shine from root to tip. Do make sure you are using an authentic boar bristle brush, however, as the plastic-bristled facsimiles won’t provide the same results.
